As a former Teamster, Governor Kulongoski knows the importance of the Labor movement and their effect on maintaining living wage jobs and growing the economy. Organized Labor has been one of the Governor's most important and steady supporters. Governor Kulongoski was the first Governor to endorse the Employee Free Choice Act, a legislative proposal currently pending in Congress that specifically calls for mandatory binding arbitration, card check elections, and employer neutrality in representing elections. The Governor’s intervention was also credited as helping Sandy recently remedy their long and bitter teacher’s strike. The Governor’s commitment to organized labor is lifelong and he believes deeply that the only way to keep Oregon’s improving economy going is with organized labor as a full and equal partner.
